TEDxLeuven, my Brain Tickle

You can treat the world as nothing is a miracle, or as if everything is a miracle.

Hello TED

I have always been a curious person. Needless to say the day a TED talk crossed my eye, I was hooked. TED, Technology, Entertainment & Design, is the American organization devoted to ideas worth spreading.

In an emotionally captivating and non-technical way, you are immersed in 18 minutes in a wide variety of fascinating topics. Over the years, TED has become my brain tickle. What I find immensely appealing is the positive worldview the organization exudes.

Giving birth to TEDxLeuven

It was early 2011 when I had a beer with one of my best friends, Peter Van Rompuy. We were discussing the “state of humanity” and both he and I were mind boggled about the things that were unfolding in front of our eyes.

The long aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis seemed to immerse society in a state of permanent depression. We sensed something different. Both being ardent believers of a positive future, we wanted to leverage a positive perspective. To achieve that goal, TEDx was the perfect platform for Leuven , the city where at the time both of us lived.

We weren’t event organizers so we sailed off into the unknown. To our surprise, the interest for the first event was massive, over 1100 people pre-registered, while we had 300 seats.

Needless to say, the organization was a spectacle since neither my friend or myself had any experience in organising events.

Luckily I was able to find a project management intern from the school where I taught at the time. Together, we had a successful event, obviously fueling our enthusiasm, to do it again “bigger and better”.

A new edition “Invent Happiness” followed filling the Leuven City theatre. In 2014, Peter moved out of Leuven and wanted to further focus on his political aspirations.

Hey Leuven!

As a result, I decided to open the doors of the organization and see whom of our community wanted to help out. This was probably one of the best decisions I made in a long time. Many responded, giving me a nice summer having drinks with all sorts of fascinating and positive people.

The collective enthusiasm where the team floated on brought us to a third event “Serendipity” early 2015 with our biggest event to date on the radar late 2016…
