How New York stole my heart.

2003. I must admit. I lost my heart in the Big Apple. Age 23 I interned at the Belgian Embassy with the United Nations for 3 months. Assisting in multilateral negotiations, drafting reports, listening to the same speeches over and over again, mingling with people from all over the world. I loved it.

You have to know, the Belgian seat is next to the representative of Belarus. Belarus isn’t considered to be the most hospitable country on the planet so I was skeptical and admittedly prejudiced.

What struck me during these months was the representative from Belarus was quite similar to me. He shared similar aspirations, had similar insecurities.

Over the course of these months, I realized the differences between each other are superficial only. We all look for the same. Our quests for happiness. We seek understanding and acceptance for being ourselves…
